Hair loss can be extremely upsetting and traumatic. It is especially difficult for young single men who desperately want to look their best. Losing your hair can make you look much, much older than you really are and can make you feel very unattractive to the opposite sex. In day’s past there was absolutely nothing you could do to prevent hair loss and/or grow back lost hair. Thankfully, this is no longer the case. There are proven and effective hair loss treatments available that can work to stop hair loss. Follow the hair loss advice contained within this article to keep as much of your hair as possible.

Before you start treating your hair loss, you first need to determine its cause. Although the majority of hair loss is genetic male pattern baldness and it is likely that this is the type of hair loss that you have, there is another kind of hair loss. Telogen effluvium is a hair loss disorder that results in diffuse hair loss all over the body. Telogen effluvium is caused by certain medical conditions such as hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism as well as high stress and severe diets. Once a doctor has ruled out telogen effluvium as being the cause of your hair loss, you can begin treatment for male pattern baldness.

There are only two treatments that have been medically proven to treat genetic male pattern baldness. The first, finasteride, is sold under the brand name of Propecia. It is an oral pill that you must take every single day in order for it to be effective. Finasteridee works by reducing scalp levels of the hair loss hormone DHT. Finasteride typically will not grow back a majority of the hair that you have lost, but it is great at stopping the progression of hair loss dead in its tracks. For this reason, you should start taking finasteride as soon as you begin to notice signs of hair loss. There are some sexual side effects associated with taking finasteride, so be sure to ask your doctor any questions you may have about the effects of being on this medication long-term.

Minoxidil, known by the brand name of Rogaine, is the other hair loss treatment that has been scientifically tested to work. Minoxidil differs from finasteride in that it is not a pill but a liquid solution that you apply directly to the areas of your scalp effected by hair loss. Minoxidil needs to be applied once or twice per day in the morning and/or evening. Although Minoxidil is typically not as effective as finasteride, some men respond very well to it and are able to grow back a significant amount of hair.

You may also want to consider using Nizoral shampoo to wash your hair. Nizoral is a special anti-dandruff shampoo that contains the ingredient ketoconazole. In some studies ketoconazole has been shown to encourage hair growth. Although it has not been FDA approved for the treatment of hair loss, it just may help you get some of your hair back, especially if used in combination with finasteride and minoxidil.

Hair loss is no fun. Use the information you’ve learned from this article to fight for your follicles and keep a full head of hair. Good luck!
