The Five Steps of Proper Hair Washing

There are a lot of things we’re accustomed to doing in life that we don’t even realize we’re doing incorrectly. Take washing your hair for example. This is something that seems incredibly easy, because it is for the most part. But you may be going about it the wrong way and you may end up damaging your hair.

Brush your hair first. There a few reasons why this is an important step to washing your hair. First and foremost, your hair is going to tangle naturally when it’s wet. So if you already have a head full of tangles, you’ll only exacerbate the problem when you wash your hair. You’ll also be tugging and pulling on your tangles while washing and rinsing, causing damage to the hair and the follicles.

Take a warm shower. The warm water (not scolding hot, but just north of lukewarm) is great for your hair, but the colder water is better for your follicles. For instance, if you’re using only warm water the entire time, your hair follicles will remain open and they can become damaged more easily. You could lose more hair at the root. But by using cold water, the follicles close and the connection is strengthened.

A proper shampooing should start at the scalp and extend out toward the tips of the hair. You should gently massage the shampoo over your scalp and throughout your hair. A solid 30 seconds of massaging is all that’s required here. The idea is to ensure that the shampoo is covering every part of the scalp and the hair. You’ll only need about a quarter’s size dollop of shampoo in the palm of your hand for this process. Anything more is just a waste.

Rinse off your hair. This is a simple step that doesn’t need much explanation. You’ll want to use warm water here, and the only real tip is to let the water naturally rinse the shampoo out of your hair. You don’t need to go in there tugging and pulling and making sure that everything’s removed. The water will do the trick. After you’re finished, you should repeat the entire process just to ensure that your scalp and hair is thoroughly cleansed.

Avoid harsh products. A lot of shampoo and conditioner products out there today contain harsh chemicals that may react badly with your scalp or with your hair type. It’s always best to use a natural product and not a product that has any color enhancer or chemical thickener in it. Harsh shampoos can irritate the scalp, dry it out, damage your hair, and possibly even cause your hair to fall out. This is obviously something you want to avoid.

Not many people think that they need a guide to shampooing their hair in the shower, but there are millions who are doing it the wrong way. These tips illustrate the proper way to do things so you’re not causing any damage to your hair while washing it. If you can follow these simple tips, you should have no trouble keeping a great-looking head of hair.
